- You want an unusual size or shape to fit an awkward corner.
- You are relaxed about it looking handmade, which most people find is the charm.
Buy one if
- It is for a nursery, school or childminding setting, where it needs to take twenty children a day and pass a risk assessment.
- You want it this month rather than the weekend after next.
- You would have to buy the tools.
- You want real steel sinks, a proper outdoor finish and no re-build in year three.
- Honestly: you know yourself, and the timber would sit in the garage until August.
If you are building, do these five things
- Use HT-stamped pallets only. MB means methyl bromide fumigation and has no place in a children’s project.
- Sand everything a child touches. Rough sawn pallet board splinters, and that is the fastest way to put a child off the kitchen for good.
- Seal every cut end. This is where water gets in, and a pallet build has dozens of them.
- Use stainless or coated screws throughout. Rusting fixings split the timber from the inside and stain every panel.
- Set the worktop 5 to 10 cm below the child’s elbow. Getting the height right matters more than any other single decision.
