Short answer
A mud kitchen suits children from around age 3 to age 10, with the sweet spot between 4 and 8. Under-threes can use one with close supervision and a step or a lower worktop. The right worktop height is a little below the child’s elbow: roughly 45 to 52 cm for a 3-year-old, 52 to 60 cm for a 4 to 5-year-old, and 60 to 67 cm for a 6 to 7-year-old. Most UK mud kitchens are built at 55 to 65 cm to cover that whole span.
Two questions arrive in our inbox more than any others: is my child old enough, and what height should it be. They are really the same question, so this guide answers both, with the numbers we would use ourselves.
What age is a mud kitchen for
Manufacturers, including us, put age 3 and up on the label. That is a safety rating, not a prediction of when the fun starts. In practice the play changes considerably as children grow, and a good mud kitchen quietly follows them.

The reason it lasts is that a mud kitchen is open-ended: it does not tell the child what the game is. That is also why children who have “grown out of it” tend to come back to it at eight or nine, usually to run something for a younger sibling.
Under three: what to watch
Toddlers love mud play, and there is no reason to keep them away from it. Three practical adjustments: stay within arm’s reach, because everything goes in the mouth at that age; keep loose stones, small pebbles and tiny utensils out of the mix until they are past the mouthing stage; and give them a stable step rather than lowering the whole kitchen, so it still fits them at five.
How tall should a mud kitchen be
The test is simple. Stand the child at the kitchen. Their forearms should rest flat on the worktop without their shoulders lifting. If they are reaching up, the worktop is too high and they will lose interest quickly. If they are stooping, it is too low and their back will tell them so.

As a rule of thumb, a comfortable worktop is around 55 per cent of the child’s standing height. Most UK manufacturers build in the 55 to 65 cm band, which is a deliberate compromise: comfortable from about 3 to 8, workable at 10.
Buying for a child who is about to grow
Do not buy for today’s height. A mud kitchen bought at 45 cm for a two-year-old is uncomfortable by the time they are four, and there is no way to raise it. Buy at the standard height and add a step, which costs a few pounds and can be taken away later. The step is the adjustable part, not the kitchen.
- Measure the child standing straight, in the shoes they wear in the garden.
- Measure elbow height from the ground with their arm hanging relaxed.
- Aim 5 to 10 cm below that elbow measurement for the worktop.
- Compare with the kitchen you are considering. If it is more than about 8 cm too high, plan for a step.
- Choose a wide, stable, non-slip step rather than a stool, because children step off sideways while carrying water.
Buying for more than one child
Siblings with a three-year age gap are the awkward case. One kitchen at standard height plus a step for the younger one works better than two kitchens, and far better than a compromise height that suits neither. If they will genuinely both be using it at once, width matters more than height: a 150 cm worktop gives them separate territory, which prevents more arguments than any amount of turn-taking.
Nurseries covering the whole 0 to 5 range
Settings often ask whether to buy two heights. In our experience one mid-height unit plus two solid non-slip steps serves better, because it keeps the whole group at one kitchen where the language and the collaboration happen. The statutory Early Years Foundation Stage framework expects daily outdoor provision, and a single shared kitchen generates far more interaction between age groups than two separate ones.
