Short answer
A mud kitchen for a toddler needs a worktop the child can reach standing, a sink they can lift and tip, and a finish that is safe to mouth once cured. Our kitchens are rated for age 3 and up, and most families buy between the second and third birthday, play alongside their child for the first months, and then keep the same kitchen in use until age 8 to 10. The 120 cm model at £499 is the usual choice for one toddler; the 150 cm suits a toddler with an older sibling.
When to buy: two, two and a half, or three
The honest answer is that the kitchen comes into its own at three. At three a child can carry a jug, stir a pan, name a recipe and follow it for ten minutes without help. That is the age we rate the kitchens for, and the age at which the play becomes independent.
Plenty of families buy earlier, for a second birthday, and there is nothing wrong with that provided an adult is alongside. A two-year-old at a mud kitchen will pour, fill, splash and taste. The pouring and filling is exactly the play they need. The tasting is why we recommend supervision, and why the paint matters more for this age than any other.
Between two and a half and three, most children move from “parallel play with an adult” to “a game of their own”. If your child is already there, buy now. Why we build toddlers a full-size kitchen, not a toddler kitchen
There is a category of tiny mud kitchens sold for age two: a small plastic or thin-ply unit with a moulded dip for a sink. They are outgrown in a year and rarely survive one winter. We do not make one, and we would not recommend buying one.
A well-made kitchen bought at two or three is used every week until eight or ten. That is why our smallest model is still 120 cm of solid spruce worktop with two real steel sinks and four burners. It looks generous for a two-year-old on the day it arrives. It looks right at four, and it is still not outgrown at eight, which is when most children lose interest of their own accord.
The two we recommend for a toddler
Safety, plainly
- Paint. We use a specialist exterior acrylic wood paint that is weatherproof and non-toxic once cured. It does not flake, so there is nothing to pick off and eat. Our safety guide covers the standards in detail.
- Timber. Solid spruce, sanded smooth before painting. No chipboard or MDF, which shed splinters and crumble when wet.
- Water. Tip the sinks out after play. A toddler can drown in very little standing water, and an empty bowl is the simplest safeguard there is.
- Stability. Stand the kitchen on level ground. A pallet-delivered, fully assembled kitchen is rigid in a way a flat-pack one never quite is.
- Mud. Use garden soil or bought topsoil, not compost with fertiliser in it. Our page on making mud explains which soil is safe.
Setting it up for a small child
Keep it simple in the first month. Two pans, one jug, a wooden spoon and a bucket of soil is plenty. Too many props and a toddler spends the session moving things around rather than cooking. Put the kitchen close to the house, on grass or on a patio you can hose, and near a water source you control, because a toddler with a running tap will empty a garden into a bog.
