Option one: a jug, and why it is better than it sounds
Carrying water is not a workaround, it is content. A full watering can is heavy, it has to be carried carefully, it has to be poured accurately, and it runs out, which means the child has to plan. That is gross motor work, fine motor work, capacity maths and a small lesson in consequences, all before anything has been mixed.
It also gives you control. Two watering cans a session is a play area. An unattended running tap is a bog by Thursday.
Option two: a gravity dispenser, the practical “working tap”
This is what most families end up doing, and it is what we would suggest first. A 5 to 10 litre drinks dispenser, the kind sold for parties, has a push or twist tap and a carry handle. It stands on the lower shelf or beside the kitchen, the child turns the tap, water comes out, and everything about it behaves like plumbing without any of the problems.
- Cost: around £15 to £25 for a decent one.
- Choose: a rigid container rather than a collapsible one, with a tap you can replace, and a wide lid so it can be filled from a hose.
- Height: the tap needs to be above the sink rim, so the shelf position matters. Standing it on an upturned crate usually solves it.
- Winter: empty it. Water left in a plastic tap will split it the first hard frost.
Option three: a DIY tap and tank
If you want a tap fixed to the kitchen itself:
- Fit a small tank above the worktop level. A jerrycan, a 10 litre food-grade container or a small water butt on a bracket. Gravity does the rest, so it must sit higher than the tap.
- Use a butt tap or a bib tap with a rubber washer, fitted through the container wall, not a domestic mixer tap.
- Run food-grade hose from the tank to the tap if the two are not in the same place, with a jubilee clip at each end.
- Position the outlet over the sink, so overflow lands in a bowl you can tip out rather than on the ground.
- Add a drain point at the lowest part of the system so you can empty it completely before the first frost.
- Test the flow rate. If it empties 10 litres in a minute, fit a smaller tap. Children will leave it running.
Why we do not fit taps to our kitchens
Our kitchens ship with two lift-out stainless steel bowls and no tap, and that is a deliberate decision rather than a saving. Three reasons. A fixed tap on an outdoor unit needs draining every autumn or it splits. A permanent water feed turns the ground under the kitchen into mud in the unhelpful sense within a fortnight. And the lift-out bowls do the job better: children fill them, carry them, tip them and wash them, which is more play and less standing water.

Water play through the year
- Summer: more water, more often. A second dispenser is worth it in a heatwave.
- Autumn: rainwater collected in a butt is free and children like using it.
- Winter: warm water from a flask changes the game completely, and ice in the sinks is its own activity.
- All year: empty the sinks at the end of play. It is thirty seconds and it removes the only hygiene issue a mud kitchen really has.
